National Poetry Writing Month is here again. I can’t believe how quickly it’s come round. My first contribution is inspired by a prompt at dVerse to write about vocation, calling – actual or dreamed of.
The Call
My life has been lived upside down
and back to front,
undirected, losing my way
and finding it again.
Various work tried
and found wanting
or boring.
Move on.
Until, later
rather than sooner,
the discovery that I could teach
progressing to
a desire and an ability to learn.

My teaching career started at 40. We learn so much through teaching, about others, about communication, about ourselves. Great start to NaPo, Viv!

Happy to see you joining in the poeming madness, Viv. This year did go by quickly. I like the idea of living life upside down. I have pretty much done the same by teaching in Mexico.

It’s wonderful that you found your vocation later in life. This way you have so much more to contribute from you experience in the University of Life. It’s never too late.

Our paths have similar. I came to teaching in my late 30’s, then stuck to it for 33 years. I love the notion that some of us “live life upside down”. What is important, I suppose, is that we do, in fact, find our way, our calling at some point before the last Act.

Happy Napowrimo! I’m doing it too. 🙂 Like you, I’ve had various first, second,….etc. careers. My favorite teachers were those who taught beyond what was in the text book. I have a feeling your students enjoy and like you. But oh, that desire to learn – like a siren always beckons.

I only teach occasionally now – English to French students – but I am a firm believer in teachers having experience of other jobs before they start teaching.

The term ‘second career’ does not come out of nowhere and while I can see why some would regret finding their calling late in life, I think it might also might them more appreciative.
