Threnody for Common Sense

Politics is a dirty game
of lies, exaggeration and skulduggery,
obnoxious scaremongering in our name
wielded with crass stupidity.
Britain’s going back
to the nineteenth century
in splendid isolationist misnomer.

We must pick up the pieces
in the aftermath ─
no-one knows quite how
to do that fairly.  To keep the peace
will be almost impossible now.

The saddest thing for me to see
is my natal country on the way
towards the type of politics
that governs the US of A …

and I didn’t even have a vote.

I wanted to make my poem for dVerse open link night relevant, but I’m probably not making much sense:  the shock of this morning’s results in the British referendum to leave Europe has completely overwhelmed me.  The pound sterling in freefall has a disastrous effect on our income, which will be stretched beyond the feasible if we have to provide our own healthcare here in France.  I pray that reason will prevail with a return to equilibrium.

It is with deepest regret and sadness that I have to inform everyone that Viv passed away two days ago. She was visiting her daughter in the North-East of England and her daughter was with her at the end, singing her favourite songs and reciting poems – very touching. Viv was a very special friend to us and will be sorely missed. We are helping to look after her husband Jock. Jonathan

I can’t believe what has happened. I am so sick of listening to people saying they want their country back or they don’t want England ruled by the French and Germans. They just can’t see how the EU holds Europe together; makes sure workers have fair pay, holidays and equal rights; allows us to travel and work across Europe; and keeps an eye on human rights too. I haven’t always lived in Britain – I left to live in Germany when I was sixteen. At this moment in time, I wish I had never come back.

  5. O Viv, you summed up so well the state of affairs. Splendid isolation not so ideal in this micro-connected world. Take care. 🙂

  7. I too am ashamed that cooperation and common sense just missed out. It seems the young had that and Scotland. Haven’t blogged for a while was travelling through La Belle France to be back to vote…. Such misunderstandings about the EU. Stay cool and peaceful and let’s not allow the Pandora’s box to be opened elsewhere. The U.K. Is divided at present but would have been whatever the result perhaps.

Very shocking to wake up to this today. Falling markets affecting many across the globe. One country’s move has a domino effect in this global economy.

Sigh.. I agree that we should do everything in our power and abstain from going back in time. Politics is a dirty and mean game.

  10. It came as a shock, and yes I’m mostly concerned about peace… and not having a vote is frustrating…
