Tempus Fugit

Tempus Fugit

It is a glorious June day
breeze enough in warm sun
to comfort my skin
yet my mind turns
back to a younger time.

We were happy then
sprawled on towels on the lawn,
nurturing a golden tan.
We giggled and chitchatted,
whispered and what if-ed ,
somehow found the impetus
to run and dive into the pool,
untroubled: our world was perfect
We flirted and canoodled,
idled whole days away.

Years pass with the speed of light
and abruptly I am gazing at
a future without distance,
with memories instead of dreams.

This somewhat sad effusion came about thanks to Bjorn’s prompt to play with tenses and flashbacks.  It didn’t help that as I write, I am listening to The Very Best of Nat King Cole, which dates from those salad days.

  1. Viv! You turned a joyous poem into a melancholy poem with just one line: a future without distance

    Brilliant but sad 😦

  2. Ah.. sweet memories remain true to form.. when dreamed today.. of feelings that do still exist.. oh the feelings are what is precious.. and feelings can go on.. in the eyes of love always..:)

I love a bit of Nat 🙂 Yes, the time ahead is most certainly shorter than that behind me too. I’d better make the most of it!

Sorry about the computer troubles. Our Internet played up for a day or so this week and the world ground to a halt 😦

nice – that brought back some childhood memories as well… some dreams have come tru – some have changed and the memory pile gets higher and higher – sigh

And I wonder sometimes if memories are dreams as well, if it’s only in retrospect that we see everything through a veil of perfection… and forget any disagreements or discomforts. Or is it that in retrospect we realise what was truly precious and important?

Lordy Viv – you’ve made me cry on a Saturday afternoon ;( I adore Nat King Cole – mostly because my Dad used to listen to him a lot when I was small (along with Perry Como and, his favourite, Matt Monro). I remember him singing ‘Unforgettable’ while he was shaving and I chose ‘Stardust’ as one of the songs to play at his funeral two years ago. I have to stop now otherwise I’ll be off again!

  9. The middle stanza is so sweet, the memory of youth is so powerful here.. But most of all I love the wisdom in the last line… Wonderfully written.
