Holidays for BigTent

Big Tent 21/2/11 holiday prompt didn’t really grab me, but I had a go.

Holidays – all the happy people
Friendship Day – if it doesn’t exist, it should
Poetry Day – be sure to read or write some
Smile day – make us all grin

Anti-holiday – all the lonely people,
debts and rows and  family splits

Commercial fest and then the sales start.
If you’ve any sense that’s when to buy
gifts for next year, and put them by.
         Remember where you’ve hidden them.

I’ve so enjoyed reading your ‘gifts’ of writing. In response to your comment on my prose. I don’t yet have a site but am taking it into consideration. Thank you for
    your responses.

I think it is too funny that there were two prompts floating around that were the opposite of each other. Great reflections of each other.

  7. “remember where you’ve hidden them” — a great line for this theme and perhaps something entirely unrelated!

Seems there is always an either or. I like the way you juxtaposed these holidays and anti.

I invariably find little presents squirreled away, say: okay then, next year; forget them again.

I’m kind of taken with the notion of an anti-holiday, Viv – albeit a less grisly one than you contemplate! I’ve never been much of a joiner and I like the sense of a day for the disaffected.

  17. I really like your description of anti-holiday,
Anti-holiday – all the lonely people,
debts and rows and family splits
Kind of reminds me what a holiday becomes when we have another intense event that is overshadowing it, the anti-holiday.

I like your litany of holidays. May I second Friendship Day. I agree—holidays for lonely people can be devastating.

  20. Guess I’m not the only one who discovers a package wrapped on Santa Clause paper the week of the 4th of July! Nice poems.

I like your suggested holidays, and you have nailed what makes the anti-holiday.

Re: the second poem – I am not much of a shopper, and the few times I have stowed away an early gift, I have had to tear things up looking for where I hid them!
