Adventures with reverse gear
New Maxi, unfamiliar
with the gears.
Gave an old lady a lift
to nearby church.
Reverse unfindable
so drove miles in a circle
to take her home.
Previous car, cranky,
parked in town on a hill.
Couldn’t engage reverse.
Inched closer to the car in front
at each futile attempt.
Handbrake on, importuned
bewildered stranger
for rescue from the jam.
