“The Indian never fishes or hunts for sport, only for food. Granpa said it was the silliest damn thing in the world to go around killing something for sport. He said the whole thing, more than likely, was thought up by politicians between wars when they wasn’t gittin’ people killed so they could keep their hand in on killing. Granpa said that idjits taken it up without a lick of thinking at it, but if you could check it out — politicians started it. Which is likely.”
Another little snippet from The Education of Little Tree by Forrest Carter
Interesting to read the controversy surrounding this writer. I see he wrote the book on which the film ‘The Outlaw Josey Wales’ was based too.

This seems an entirely new poetic ‘voice’ for you.

Not my voice, though the thoughts resemble my own philosophy, which is why the book resonates so strongly for me.

Oscar Wilde had it best: “The unspeakable in pursuit of the inedible”. But I do draw the line at roadkill.

Yes, that is a step too far.

Interestingly, Oscar wrote ‘in full pursuit of the uneatable’ presumably because of the near-rhyme with ‘unspeakable’. Roadkill is. at least, unintended (one hopes) and if there are no natural scavengers in the area one might as well become one.

Roadkill can be dangerous unless very fresh, because the insides rupture and taint everything, and blood pools in the carcass instead of draining. Perhaps too much detail, but I’d rather leave it to the scavengers. I think Oscar was referring to foxhunting, and foxes are, I’m told, not very pleasant eating, very strong meat, not to mention all the adrenaline pumping through their systems as a result of the extremely unpleasant experience they’ve just undergone.

carnivores don’t normally eat other carnivores for those reasons.

That makes sense!
Oscar was, indeed, referring to foxhunting and I agree with his sentiments. Rascals though they may be, I like foxes.

so do I. My favourite of Jock’s embroideries has gone to his grand-daughter, but he’s doing another one now, so perhaps I’ll get to keep it.

Wise words. What’s so sporting about stalking and killing some wild creature with a weapon? Unfair, unbalanced, unnatural.

If you kill something, eat it.
