The end of an era…

It is with great sadness ViV compressedthat we have to tell you that Mum (Viv) died on the night of Tuesday 5 July.

This was her own epitaph written in May 2014 as it seems most appropriate to use her own words.

I will go down fighting
for that which I hold most dear:
for home and family and friends,
but when it’s time for me to go
I hope it’s without fear.

I want to lie in idleness
beneath my favourite tree.
Let my biodegradable body be compost,
ensure nature’s continuity
by adding to fertility:
enrich the soil with me.

She loved blogging and the community of everyone out there in the blogging world with whom she communicated on-line.  This had kept her going over many years since she made her first steps into this environment on 23 April 2010.  Thank you to everyone who has helped and encouraged her over these 6 years of blogging.

O my dearest Viv, just now, so very late
in things I’m already missing you sooo!!
You were like a mentor to me, off and on
I would learn new forms and how to improve.
Seems I must have graduated or moved
upwards as I’ve been gone from here so long.

I know your remaining things in the blogs
are in good hands with thy Daughter Tilly.
We’ve met on Tilly blog just a bit, here I am
known as Jim of Jim’s Little Photo and Poem Place.
Thank you for watching over her earthly things.
And for keep alive the loving reputation she had.

    To Viv’s family,
I wish you all the best of memories. I first met Viv on a writing site in 2010 – the site is no longer operating, but I was able to continue sharing with Viv for many years.

When I lost my father over 15 years ago I created a non-traditional booklet for bereavement. If you email me with an address I would love to send you a copy of it to share with your family.

    Sincerely, Jules

I am so sorry for your loss. Viv was a force to be reckoned with and one of the poets I’ve written online with the longest – close to six or seven years, I believe. I will miss her unflagging support and inspiration and, as at least one other person has mentioned, am glad that you’ve used the photo of her in her cap and gown. She was so proud of that moment – and rightly so. I know we were lucky to have her with us as long as we did, but it doesn’t lessen the sting of her death. My heart goes out to all of you.

My deepest condolences to Viv’s family and friends who lost a shining light in their lives. I first became acquainted with Viv several years ago in the first group of poets I joined and most recently we shared together on dVerse Poet’s. She had a true poet’s heart and I enjoyed her honesty and encouraging words. I enjoyed looking at her photos of she and her husband’s works of art that she shared…also the photos of the countryside around her home.

Her last words were so touching, and so “Viv.” Rest in peace, Viv, I’m going to miss you.

What a wonderful world we live in that the community of love and support spans the globe at such a time as this. We poets/bloggers who have loved and followed (and been followed by) ViV for these many years will now learn to go on without her ever-present words of encouragement. But what better poets/bloggers we have become because of them.

Thank you to ViV’s family for sharing her with us, in cyberspace, these past six years. May you find comfort in your fond memories of ViV. And may our words–though they fall short (even if writers, we may be!)–help you know that you’re not alone in the grieving process.

    VIV IN FRANCE

I learned today I lost a friend, one I’d never personally met: Viv in France. For some unknown reason, she liked my poetry blog. That part was mutual, I liked hers.

The first message I ever received from Viv came in the form of an apology. She had read one of my poems and found a misspelled word (not an unusual occurrence). She apologized for her arrogance in pointing out the misspelling, but felt it spoiled an otherwise good poem.

From that humble correspondence, we became poetry friends. She became my unofficial mentor and proof-reader. Rhyme, half-rhyme, meter, punctuation (or purposeful lack thereof), all the way through a myriad of poetry forms, she was there with me. There is no way for me to express how much I learned from her, how much she influenced my writing, or how much I’m going to miss reading the beauty and wisdom that dripped daily from her pen.

Several years ago, I went back to the beginning of her blog and read everything she ever posted. Early on, I signed up to receive everything new she posted on her blog. Checking her blog daily was like my morning coffee: always delightful, whether a poem, information on a new quilting project, or a full-blown rant.

When changes in my life took away my blogging time, I continued receiving occasional emails from her; just checking on me and encouraging me write more poetry when I found some time.

Today, I clicked onto the latest posting of her blog, only to find out it was from her family, notifying her readers that our precious friend had passed away.

Not sure how I’m going to handle that yet, but I know that Viv is okay. She’s at peace painlessly walking new paths and examining new species of flowers. It’s to her family and her many friends I address my prayers. Would that we could all have a life as joyous and meaningful as hers. Not only was she blessed, she blessed everyone with whom she came in contact.
