Sniglet

No, I haven’t made a typo
reversed letters like a tyro ─
a sniglet is what I meant
not a seedy undergarment.
A sniglet is
a useful word
for something
which lacks a name,
like thingamajig,
whatjamacallit
thingamabob
hoojamaflip
or whatsit
doodah,
gismo,
thing.

This intriguing little word popped up in my inbox as word of the day from Dictionary.com, and is defined as any word coined for something that has no specific name, any word that doesn’t appear in a dictionary but should.  It wasn’t in my thesaurus!

  1. It’s a fantastic word, isn’t it? As soon as it came into my inbox, I printed it out. I never thought of writing a poem to it, though 😉

It does sound as though it should be in the dictionary, Viv, doesn’t it?

Never come across it before, Viv, but it’s just busting to get into one of my sentences 🙂

I have a couple of new ones for you:
doovalacky (completely interchangeable with thingy, doodah or whatsit)
poofteenth (a very small amount, a whisper, a hair, a fraction)
Both are common Australian colloquialisms and personal favourites!

A lovely word. It sounds cute somehow – like a ‘piglet’
