Anchored to the ground
going round and round
on earth’s axis without moving
anywhere.
Same view from where I am
grass and sky and trees
Please let me travel elsewhere
to see the sea
Must get off the globe
to find a better road
so we can choose to go
somewhere
Only see from here
same grass and sky and trees
Please let me travel somewhere
to see the sea
Anchored to the spot
distance covered not a lot
but the mind still wanders free
everywhere.
Desert, plain or mountain
man-made cityscape
or nature’s wilderness
Now I see the sea
Poetics at dVerse Poets’ Pub has us in a song-writing vein to seek the music in us. My music is somewhat stifled since my piano and clarinet went travelling back to England four years ago, but I can still hum!
It would be fun to put that to music, but although at first it would seem to call for a hymn-type tune, preferably something more ambitious.
I can understand why the piano went, but why the clarinet? I would be lost without one of each of those, plus violins and my range of recorders. And now, a guitar added! And I don’t care that I play all of them awfully – I get enjoyment out of doing it!

It was originally my daughter’s – I learned to play it after she left for university. As I made progress, I replaced it with a better one. Then my breathing became problematical and I stopped playing.though I occasionally dream I am playing the Weber first concerto I did try again with horrible results, before giving it to her so that she and my grandson can enjoy it. He is very musical and does a fair bit of composing.

Sad. Especially after having the skill for such concertos. I have never reached that level, and it is most unlikely that I will do so.
How about a recorder? The alto is fun, and they make far less demands on breath.

I have a recorder (descant) that I bought in a vide grenier (jumble sale). My favourite is treble – and S has that one too. I shall make a point of playing it when I go over at the end of the moth.

Well, tone deaf I am but still humming your words here — some long drawn out wistful notes, longing for the sea.

These are lovely.
I’d like to see them reading diagonally on a page, tilted like the earth’s axis.

I’m rooted too and long to see the sea. My son went yesterday and will take photos, but here I sit longing for the sound and wind from the waves. It feels different and I want to go too. This poem expressed it so well.

I don’t need to see the sea
Lake Erie is good enough for me!

You mind me of the benefit of having a background in music when it comes to poetry. Although I no longer play piano or organ, there is a certain rhythm that drives us in writing, isn’t there?

Absolutely, rhythm is king in poetry.

This is splendid… that longing for the sea (or maybe free horizons) is one I feel too… getting close to water is one thing, to actually see the blue line of earth’s curvature another… I love the way you have built up the refrain… great humming.

Great poem, Viv. Hope you do get to see the ocean before too long. xx

It’s not too far from here. But the longing for it fit the song.

I think it must have a catchy tune to fit these musical lyrics…I’m glad the mind still wanders free! I must play my flute while I still am able 🙂

Viv, You have the rhythm and meter of a true musician! That longing to see the sea is strong for many of us. Thank you for sharing this marvelous song 🙂

Your mind’s eye will always go a-wandering, Viv 🙂 Just tucking into British strawberries. Must be nearly time for Wimbledon.

I’ve never been able to play a musical instrument – unless you count the recorder – I used to drive my Mum mad with ‘London’s Burning’ – but I imagine it would be very hard not to have a piano around once you are able to play. Don’t you miss it?

Yes and no. Having played piano (and other instruments) all my life, it is an integral part of me. But my skills started to desert me and music became more pain than pleasure. What I miss now is not so much the actual instrument as the ability to make music.
