Mirror Dinghies racing, image from Ullman Sails
Flat calm and no-one’s going anywhere
First ripple in the glass, we start to hope
The shadow of a squall stains the surface
A boom swings out, sails fill, haul on ropes.
The gunwales dip and we are flying on the breeze.

I really like your images of the way the wind affects the surface of the water. How lovely, to be sailing with a good wind.

This sounds like something you know by experience: Finally got a quadrille up:

Very good – except that a glance from a yachtsman tells that it isn’t a flat calm and the Mirrors are making reasonably fast progress! Full sails, bone in teeth, rudder wash and wakes all confirm that.

That was the best Mirror pic I could find on t’net, but I agree it’s not exactly calm or even light breeze!

I enjoyed the picture, though. With a decline in popularity of dinghy racing in SA, such sights are seldom seen here these days. I remember with fond nostalgia when we would curse our way through the large Mirror fleet that had started with a flock of Dabchicks some twenty minutes ahead of us

My late ex built our Mirror in our dining room. It’s just been given to his local sailing club in Northern Ireland, so has a new lease of life.

A wonderful design – those things can go on forever!

I’m not a fan of yachts on the water or in the harbour – such a messy sight )

You could hardly call 10 ft Mirror dinghies yachts! And a flotilla of dinghies is one of the most beautiful things to see.

I’ve only had the chance to be on a sailboat once…but it was dead-calm that day too…fortunately this boat was also equipped with a motor. So while I was on a sail-boat, the sails weren’t even unfurled…maybe someday…

A breeze of hope for those “flat calm” going nowhere times. The weather always changes. 🙂

I’d prefer flat calm – I get seasick! An engaging response though 🙂

Come fly with me — skim those ripples — I’m right there waiting and catching the breeze! 🙂

Nothing like images of the water to catch the souls of your readers. Such a breezy take on the prompt! Thanks for sharing 🙂

This brings me back to those days I was waiting for a breeze to fill the sails… I had a dinghy once, but I got tired of waiting for the breeze and switched to a kayak…

You cerntainly seem to know your sailing vocabulary – I only know it from books, like Swallows and Amazons. But, yes, not quite sailing weather here for the past week or so…

We had a Mirror Dinghy – built in our dining room in the 60’s.

Happy memories for you 🙂 🙂 Is it as grim over there as I imagine? I’ve been trying to watch the French Open! Maybe today? Cold and windy here but it’s 1st June tomorrow. Summer guaranteed. Ha! 🙂

We didn’t get the Paris rain yesterday, but It’s chilly and windy here today.
