Amuse me, my muses.

Where are you hiding, Calliope?
Terpsichore, Erato, I need you, too.
I see you there, lurking in the fog
of muddled thought,
jinking in and out of consciousness
like  naughty children.

Please, won’t you come out to play?
Play properly, with real words
and no small contribution from Euterpe.
I promise I’ll be good
and write to your dictation
so that we can all dance and sing,
tell epic stories,
and pay passionate court
to our lovers.

My muse is AWOL just now, so for dVerse Open Link Night I’m linking this poem written for a National Poetry Day and posted here in October 2010.

You always say you can’t find your Muse(s) but then you write a poem and there they are! I so enjoyed this playful poem.

Oh I hate it when muses don’t behave! This was fun to read, Viv.

Ha, ha, I love the scolding, begging and entreating of the muses! I often feel mine have deserted me too – they dare not come because I wave the flag of busy-ness at them!

Ah, sometimes the Muse takes leave, needing to rest her head upon the flowers of spring . And so glad she did — love reading this!

Classical music, but completely without the ‘ick’. 🙂

  6. Oh those feeble muses… I know how they love to tease. Being inspired on command is the poet’s ordeal.

Viv! You have captured it! Especially that bit about taking dictation. Perhaps try being snotty with your muses. “Fine! That’s just fine!” They will come crawling back the moment you ignore them and appear to have fun without them. They are such children! Thanks for sharing this charming poem 🙂

Gee, your muses are fun-loving. Mine comes in wearing spikes and leather, carrying a bull whip. Not actually. She is a slave-driver, ‘though. Fun poem; nicely worded and with a joyous tone.

When my muse is AWOL, I take the day off by walking and being immersed in other activities ~ Hopefully the words will come back soon 🙂

Mine too… feeling a bit like a stunned mullet, as they say here so picturesquely.
    Can’t think
    brain numb.
    Inspiration
    won’t come.

Tell epic stories and play passionate court indeed, Viv… Though written some time ago, this tells me there’s plenty more to come VIv and I’ll be back to see… With Best Wishes – even our muses sometimes deserve a holiday!

  17. I don’t remember this one.

My muse has been absent for months but I’m forcing it back with trite poetry. Better trite poetry than no poetry (so long as no one reads it).
