QUADRILLE

Never Satisfied

Through grim grey months of winter
I long for the rebirth of green,
complain at the late arrival
of birds and bees, leaves and flowers

In May, overwhelmed
by half-remembered greens
in  diversity to blind us,
I complain at rapid growth of the lawn

It takes my husband most of the day to cut our grass – more if he goes up higher and uses the brush cutter – and, as he’s only here at weekends, it takes up a big chunk of time. Still, I have suggested we get a gardener – just for the grass and weeds – but he won’t hear of it in case they do something he doesn’t like. You can’t help some people.

I’ve not forgotten your offer to read the new story . . . One more chapter to do.

My health dictates I must pay a gardener to mow & weed, which heightens my bliss at the yard & garden’s beauty; but yes, some of us would complain if they hung us with a new rope.

Oh as much I curse the work that comes with spring and summer maintenance, picking up hundreds of sticks from our trees, mowing the lawn, weeding……I wouldn’t trade it for winter.

  11. Yes we pray for warm weather, forgetting about the work that goes into keeping the backyards and flowerbeds looking decent.

Tis the human condition to long for what is not. At least you don’t need to clamber aboard a ride on mower and snarl and chug around 3/4 acre. A pocket handkerchief of grass is nice…

ah chuckling I am…..living in the midst of the city, 7th floor in a high rise….I remember those days of “oh thank you god for the green and spring” and then three weeks later, “insert-expletive-here we have to mow the lawn again!” 🙂 Great take on the prompt!

I love it when the lawn overflows with green ~ Good thing we have a landscape contractor who mows and keep the grass in check ~

  18. I was just thinking this morning as I went out to my car for work how I “have to” prune the roses tonight because there are so many that have bloomed and faded already. I could almost complain. Thanks for the reminder that the spring growth is a blessing and the thing to complain about is past for another year. 🙂

  19. Ha.. yes we long and long for that green, just to curse the growth… that’s why I don’t have a lawn.. a meadow to cut once a year with scythe works just as well.
