Newborn – a Haibun

“Yours is the light by which my spirit’s born: – you are my sun, my moon, and all my stars.”
― E.E. Cummings

After the struggle, the stress and the strain, I look at my child in wonder;  responsible for this helpless being, do I have what it takes to protect, shape, nurture and guide him through the hazards of childhood and beyond, until the time is ripe to launch him into independence, set him free?

From seed to plant
to flower, to fruit –
an exploration

I love that you focused on the positive side, Viv. I’ve always said that being a mother has been both the best time of my life and the worst. The responsibility can be overwhelming at times.

Life’s journey can be better accomplished if one is expected to undertake a responsibility along the way.

  8. I love that you took this quote to parenthood, instead of romance. The heart of every parent in your words.

Raising a child is an experience that fills a parent with an equal amount of awe and fear, I think. It is such a great honor as well as great responsibility to guide a child to adulthood. Your haiku is right on target.

  11. I love that you chose this quote and went to joy and hope instead of darkness like so many of us did. You make me want to write something like this for OLN. Beautiful.

I can relate as I have children on my own ~ I think as time goes on, we become wiser with handling children ~ It is indeed an exploration, a journey ~ I love the quote you have chosen Viv ~

Double, double like! I was going to go for this one and refer to my children too, and you took the words out of my mouth – exactly how I wonder and feel and worry!

  17. I love where you took the prompt… so much worry for a parent/mother on what it means to bring a child to life… wonderful how you used the most positive of the quotes…
