A cat’s life for me, a pampered domestic cat
with ample laps at hand for caresses
and gourmet food at the drop of a hat;
a garden safe from marauding dogs
where I could hunt discreetly for
that tempting furred or feathered prey
which I devoutly hope would escape me.
I’d only do it for the fun, to keep my wits alert
with stalking, creeping, leaping play
and a comfy bed at the end of the day
where in a coddled coiled heap
I would purr and sweetly sleep.
Celie Gunther’s conversible cats – their life is somewhat freer than I envisage for my second coming, but they are contented cats.
For the prompt at thepoet’s pub last night , Abhra asked “do you want to be reborn as who you are? Do you think you could come back like a bird? What would you be looking for if you come back?” I missed the cut-off, so have posted it instead for the pub’s Open Link Night
Cats are my faves. They can be a ball of rebellious energy or peaceful fur babies. Nice write.

Ah.. the balance
of the noble
inside outside
cats.. ours always
live longer than
domesticated
only inside
ones it
seems
by double..
but yeah..
so sweet
they are inside
as well.. so pampered..:)

I LOVE this! I always said if I had to come back, I’d want to be a cat in my mother or my aunts’ or my best friend’s house. This is clever but it also shows a true knowing of cats.

How fun. I would like to be a bird but will need to eschew you, my friend.

Smiling I am! Years ago — many years ago — when we lived in the country, we adopted a cat we found sitting outside in the dead of winter, under a dryer vent — shivering and with one frostbit ear. On the way home in the car, with the poor forlorn cat in my lap, it just purred and purred and purred…so content, finally getting warm, and I suspect, knowing it was going to have a home. So we named him Purrsalot! 🙂 Thanks for the memories….

As I watch my cat sleeping on a blanket on the sofa all day and then idly watching the birds outside, getting cuddles and food on tap, going outside only when it’s nice weather… I couldn’t agree more! A charming poem.

Very nice – and coming back a cat would be quite interesting… I’m sure my oldest cat, Rocket, now 17 has come back from being the little old man that he once was… I think he prefers being a cat. Loved your poem.

You’ve captured the life of many a pampered cat. I have often thought that could be the next life for me!

Oh, I could go for a cat’s life for a while. Living in a comfortable setting, food, a human to love me, and NINE lives to boot. What more could one desire!

And C’s cats have a calm and lovely life. Not an unpleasant way to return. 🙂

Your alliteration and assonance are simply spectacular here, Viv.
I wouldn’t mind a cat’s life, that’s for sure. 🙂

I agree, cats seem to have very nice comfy life… to sleep and still be fit, to nibble delicacies and go your own way… 🙂

Sigh…I have felt this way…mostly of the dogs that I’ve been so blessed to live with…I’d love to trade shoes sometimes…or paws for shoes… 😉

Even though I’m more of a ‘dog person’ I wouldn’t want to be dragged out in all weathers for a walk, like it or not, and be expected to do somebody’s bidding (not that any of mine do!). So, I think a cat would be best – as long as I had a safe and loving home that is – and I’d prefer to eat fresh chicken and fish. Cat food smells bad.

Hmm. If I were given horrid food I would be more likely to kill those nice mice and birds.

I would come back as a spider, so that I can continue to create things of beauty with thread. My sewing machine is called Ariadne, and has a little plastic spider stuck to it…
