And Here is the News

This is the BBC Home Service
and here is the news
in honeyed tones with
suitable expression
for the intelligentsia.

The news is as usual,
people bombing people
murder, mayhem, madness
and disaster  with politics
thrown in for good measure
a rough idea of the weather
business and money|
and the minutiae of sport.

This is the Daily Splurge
all the news tarted up for idiots
gossip and scandal
with a larding of glamour
horoscope, easy crossword
Sudoku and the like
plus miles and miles of sport.

I don’t want to hear that
I don’t want to read that
I am an ostrich.

Margo Roby’s Tuesday Tryout today has a gorgeous painting by Mary Cassatt of a lady reading a newspaper, and she suggests we think about how we take the daily news

It’s a great one, Viv. – So I’m an ostrich too. Since long I do not own TV, I quit newspapers – just taking my time, wasted paper and always nothing but crime and other bad stuff. I cannot afford it to cram my mind with all that crappy stuff. I think we have to care for our inner world and our hearts very much – there’s no need and no place for it. We have to let in more of the beauties of life. Though there’s enough of that crap yet that still finds it’s way through to me. – (Hope that goes for English… – or does it sound mad?)
Have a nice and beautiful day, Viv!

I’m reading and thinking ‘Oh God, it’s true’ and then I hit the last stanza and laughed.

When I skim the daily, I find myself wondering if good things have stopped happening, or if it is against policy to print anything about them.

  5. There’s very little news these days, mostly it’s talking heads telling us what to think. I’m never sure I’m getting anything but propaganda. Here’s to ostriches everywhere.

Well said. It makes me so upset and I can’t do anything about what is going on in every country, so I turn off a lot now.

I don’t want to hear it either. And I refuse to listen to the news today, and hear all that warmongering.

I don’t watch the T.V. news any more – it’s sensationalized, dumbed down and repetitive. I take a weekly magazine with all the news from around the world which, by necessity, has to be succinct. It does mean I’m generally a bit behind but I know that if anything really important is going on I will hear about it anyway and, if I don’t, it probably wasn’t worth getting depressed about.

  10. No news read or heard after 7 in the evening! Your poem captures the news so well! 🙂

We don’t take a paper; I find the bias one way or the other in all of them rather hard to take. We have SBS, a TV channel which provides a news service in dozens of languages, gives proper international news coverage and which seems to be the least slanted. I do know what you mean about the BBC World Service: everything delivered in a sort of mellow moo guaranteed to make the most atrocious information soothing…

  12. This is so clever and so very true. I still skim the paper but it can be so depressing. I don’t know if it’s possible to bury our head in the sand because there’s news everywhere we look. I just tried to take it in divided doses. I guess, for some of us, there is good news – we are on our way out! 😂
