Sonnet Written in Shock

The grief at yet more crazy killing
is ripe to explode from me in words.
How  could any human being
inflict such terror city-wide?
What do they want, these murderers?
No adequate adjectives exist
in any language to express
revulsion for such unprovoked
barbarity.  Innocent victims out
in search of music, sport or food
massacred in blood ice-cold
by misbegotten savagery.
..Absolution will not be given
..by any God in any heaven.

Miz Quickly’s prompt today asks us to write a sonnet.  The shock of last night’s events is still too raw for coherent writing, so I hope you’ll forgive this clumsy attempt.

I agree it is hard to find adjectives for this situation. The people killed were doing nothing other than enjoying an evening out. No political agenda…nothing; and yet they were targeted for death. This insanity is frightening; and it is difficult to keep the hope……though we must, we truly must.

  9. The ice-cold purpose for their action is alas too understandable. Daesh has said it for years, they want us to retaliate, that’s why they attack tolerance and acceptance… attacking innocents, and unprotected… they want to polarize… They act exactly like any fascists have ever done..

  10. I think your sonnet is a very powerful response to such a tragedy. Poetry can provide a place for reflection. That is needed now and perspective. My children’s nana talked about how she helped her father put out the fires from bombs during the blitz on Friday on the radio. She was asked if she was frightened. Her answer was a clear no. We need to reflect and and be strong enough to live through this and support those in pain.

    • There were times when we were frightened, and the worst of those were the flying bombs/Doodlebugs, because if the drone of the engine stopped when it got near, you knew you were for it. My Grandmother was killed by a Doodlebug and my mother, who’d survived the London Blitz unscathed, had had enough. She packed a suitcase and took us children to Suffolk to live with my Greataunt.

      • Sounded tough for your mother. I think we fear more for our children and it was easier for those who were younger. My mother would be at the Hammersmith Palais during the blitz! Hope all will be more settled in Paris soon. London was nervous after the tube bombings. This seems a horrible escalation . Take care.

Another thought on the subject: By targeting France and the French, they may have bitten off more than they can chew. There is a history there of not taking oppression well. I refer you to a translation of part of the Marseillaise:

The vile despots would have themselves be
    The masters of destiny

    Tremble, tyrants and traitors
The shame of all good men
    Tremble! Your parricidal schemes
    Will receive their just reward
Against you we are all soldiers
If they fall, our young heroes
    France will bear new ones
Ready to join the fight against you…

I went to ‘that’ place with my daily…at my short verse site.

The sonnet, I went elsewhere; there needs to be some humor.

  15. “Absolution will not be given
..by any God in any heaven.” Hate in the name of God, whoever’s God, is a paradox, but somehow it is so often done in His name. How do people allow themselves to be so deceived and so manipulated by the ‘holy’ leaders? My heart grows more sorrowful every day for this world.

  17. katechiconi says:

Mankind is not civilised, no matter what we like to think. This hatred of the ‘other’ is barbaric. ‘Difference or divergence cannot be tolerated. You do not think, believe, eat, drink, dress or love as I do. You must subject yourself to me, or die’. It is inhumane, abhorrent.
