Hot, cold, hot , wet, dry,wet
This has been a most peculiar summer – the weather doesn’t seem able to make up it’s mind. Two days ago it poured all day, sweaters on, lit the fire in the living room. Yesterday was one of the best days of the summer, took sweater off, went
blackberry picking, sat outside. Today is starting off in a threatening manner. Anyway, if it rains, tant pis: I have bramble jelly to finish making, from windfall apples, the few blackberries picked plus a bag of last year’s fruit from the freezer.
Our enchanting small friend Constance was with us for two mornings this week,
and it will take another week to recoup the energy!
My mulberries looked like those blackberries. Huge, sweet and extremely abundant this year. More than enough to share with the birds.

You’ve made me smile today. If it rains, too bad. 🙂 We FINALLY had some rain and I’m hoping for more. The weather is sideways everywhere. I’m delighted to have a break from the intense heat we’ve had all summer. My brambles are growing under the trees and get not enough sunshine for berries, only brambles. Little ones wear me out faster now too. I sure wish we could turn the energy ration around.

Hello Viv, we picked up blackberries this morning. At the supermarket. While they will be lovely with yogurt, nothing I can do to them will make them look as gorgeous as your freshly picked berries! Just found and followed your lovely blog.

Bramble jelly! I am sure I’ve heard of it in stories as a child. But I don’t know what it is nor have I ever heard of anyone outside of a fairy tale making or eating it! I’m enchanted!

Blackberry and apple jelly (jam without the pips) – I’ve made it every year for 60 years!

Bramble jelly – childhood bliss! They built a council estate on the fields and hedges where we used to pick blackberries.

Yeah, we had our typical 3 days of summer and are now fully engaged in our (as ever) fully variable Autumn. Snow’s around the corner.

Rain, rain, rain, and lots of it here! It feels more like autumn. I’ll be making applesauce this weekend, and Peder will make more pickles. We’ll have lots of pickles this year!

Bramble jelly is an enduring memory of English summers… Sadly not available here – brambles are a noxious weed in Australia and are ripped out at the first sign!

grow them in your garden against a hedge or fence, prune judiciously and you will always
have luscious fruit for jelly.
Ten jars made this morning and now I’m whacked!

I would, but it’s actually illegal! I can do it with some of the hybrids which have been bred to be non-invasive, but apart from that issue, they don’t do so well in our climate, which doesn’t get cool enough.

Definitely one of the oddest Augusts weather wise – resisting tights so far on the cold days!

I have to wear compression stockings, which are OK when it’s cold, but a b….y nuisance at anything over 25 C.
