About this time I start to think
about a cup of tea
when all at once I need a drink
and Jock makes it for me.
The humming sound the kettle makes
tells me it won’t be long
Ah here it comes, with home-made cake
Hooray I wasn’t wrong.
In Meeting the Bar at dVerse tonight, Victoria Slotto gives us a well-informed article on Emily Dickinson and common meter. I tried, I really did, but this is all I could come up with. Shame on me. This is the kind of thing my Dad and I used to do all the time – fun it was, but poetry it is not!
I will try again when I am not so weary.
We are lucky to have spouses who care to surprise us in the most simplest of ways 🙂

I dish-agree strongly. Poetry it is – far, far more than the meaningless muddles that many put forward as being so.

Your poem made me smile. Unfortunately it also made me long for a piece of homemade cake, which I do not have!

Poetry it is! I think we get too caught up thinking of Emily as a solemn, death absorbed person when in truth, she was mischievous and enjoyed the everyday joys and wrote of them with her unique perspective. I truly enjoyed this and it gave me a needed smile.

Well, that was a fun and unusual take on the common meter – I do think it adapts itself very well to humour. And I gather Emily was a very keen cake-baker!

Somehow, reaching into the fun in your past, you found a connection between common meter, ala ED,& limerick, putting a big smile on many faces.

I love this, Viv!!! Really, these Emily D. inspired poems are just the best! I’m having the best time reading everyone’s work. 🙂
I just read your footnote, and you are absolutely wrong. Don’t ever let anyone tell you that this isn’t magnificent poetry. It’s a pleasure to read, and it captures such feelings of joy, love, and appreciation. I think people like to read different types of poetry, and that’s fine. But this is absolutely poetry. You silly thing. I’d love to read more like this!

It was fun and made me smile. I think that makes it poetry. Anything with home-made cake in it is worth the time to read. Peace, Linda

Viv, I really enjoyed this poem. It not only followed Emily’s form but expressed a slice of real life as well. Nothing better than tea and cake when served with love.

Nooo, I made that up to fit the rhyme scheme. In fact it was a Walker’s Scottish Shortbread biscuit!

🙂 Shortbread would be nice.

Fun, indeed–a little levity is good, especially since so many of us, myself included, went to the dark side. I can’t help but think that if Emily could have added a bit more humor she might have been a bit better balanced, happier. I’ll take that drink now.
