Amateurism

There are days when words flow like lava
and other days more like a blocked-up sink.
This is a day to get out the plunger .

Poetry aficionado, wannabe professional,
my slapdash efforts are more dilettante
than skilful, more’s the pity.

Miz Quickly wants us to play with synonyms and antonyms for the word amateur
and use four of them in a poem.  I’ve used five, just to assert my independence.

Six years into my retirement, your words resonate so strongly with me, but my wife will still be working for a couple of years, so our summer road trips are golden. Your clever poem was so much fun to read, even though in 50 years, I, personally never hint the block–it all just keeps flowing. Now as to repetitive themes, lines, words, style, & message–that’s for others to fret over.

Ha ha – what a fun write – never had anyone describe the writers’ block so nicely. Wish there was a plunger that worked in those days.

Funny….I think vacations can be plungers…at least can clear the mind a little, but sometimes a real plunger is necessary

  6. OMG–the plugged up sink…a perfect metaphor. It sound like you and I share the ups and downs of inspiration vs. the blahs. I so relate.

Indeed, there are many days when a plunger should be called in. Smiles!! Perhaps we should pass it around the blogosphere?

Amateurish is not a word I would use about your poetry! I think we all have those days when the plunger is needed or a hammer or a laxative….and then, those wonderful days when the words truly are like lava – unstoppable, hot, all consuming. Most excellently done!

Ah, Viv! Your voice is SO strong – how you nail things with such dash too. “This is a day to get out the plunger.” gave me my biggest smile of the day… With Best Wishes Scott http://www.scotthastie.com

Rebel is one of my many middle names 😉
Glad to be among your ranks — hum maybe better words; companionable journey into poetry.
Though I am sure there are moments that we all could …smell better.

Thanks for enjoying my ‘play’ on the prompt.

  16. Nice, Viv!! Yes, I’ve had and am very familiar with plunger days and the days when the drain is plugged but the water (over)flows…nowhere to go… 🙂
