I’ve watched a lot of tennis
this week and listened to a lot of drivel in the commentaries. In the days of Dan Maskell, he said just what was necessary and shut up the rest of the time. Nowadays, the likes of John McEnroe suffer from verbal diarrhoea, causing me to mute the sound, thus missing that lovely thwack of ball against racquet.
My latest patchwork project bag is coming on nicely, though I am stalled over the design for the straps. An experimental idea last night of reducing the block to a triangle shape and fixing the straps at the apex was an abysmal failure. Back to the drawing board.
Jock found a piece of artist’s Daler board which he cut to size for me, and I have encased in an envelope of fabric to go into the bottom. Thus when filled with clobber, the bag won’t take on the usual bucket look!
The pocket is simply a single block. Also, I can’t decide how to fasten it. I definitely don’t want a zip. As I was planning to take the finished bag to England on Tuesday, I shall have to get a move on!
your bag looks lovely and I love the bottom and button solutions. Have a grand time on the other side of the pond!

Mute is my favorite button the the remote! The commentators tend to talk way too much for me! btw-McEnroe has always been annoying. IMO
Hope you have a wonderful time traveling!

I love watching Wimbledon but I too get irritated but the inane and unnecessary verbal garbage coming out of the mouths of those so called commentators! Only last night several of us were having a good moan about McEnroe babbling on during play. Why commentators anyway? The courtside crowd manage without them! Grrrrr! Rant over!!!!!

Your timing is good, Viv! It always falls a little flat after Wimbledon so a nice time to travel. Will try and keep the nice weather going for you. Safe trip! 🙂

Really pretty little bags, Viv! As for tennis, it’s Andy Roddick that annoys me no end. xx

Him too. And there’s a woman commentator with a very grating voice. It’s the tennis that counts, not the words!

The comments make me laugh. I don’t watch tennis but my son loves the sport and watches since he can no longer play long. Knees. 😦 I told him it was like watching paint dry but with a lot of awful noise. He gets annoyed with me. As for the bag, you sent me to search Goggle I needed to find out what daler board was and think it’s a fine idea for the bottom of bags. I think how you clasp it depends on what you use it for. I like the long loop to a button option. The design is lovely. Straps I like long enough to go over my shoulder. The color could lend itself to denim straps for strength. But in those quiet moments, the proper way to do it for your use will come to you.

The button it is, and a longish shoulder strap.

I don’t watch much tennis, V, but I don’t think that muting the comments would be worth missing the thwacks. I could also do without the overly-energetic grunt/screams that so many of the players have incorporated each time they connect with the ball.

I hardly watch any women’s tennis any more for fear of the screams.

The bag’s looking good Viv. If you don’t want a zip what about a popper or a magnetic one – although that might be a little heavy for a fabric bag.

button and loop is the decision.

When travelling a long strap is always good as it is easier if the strap crosses the body to make it less likely to fall off your shoulder! Sally

You could also ask Jock to make you a large wooden button from a suitably sized branch. Duncan made me some apple wood buttons using a hack saw blade. Sally

I’ve done that in the past, but I found just the right big blue button in my collection.

I haven’t seen any Wimbledon but know what you mean about the inane chatter that now goes side by side with any major event/sporting event. Grrrr. x

I know just what you mean about the Wimbledon commentators – I think they feel they cannot leave even a second unfilled. This morning on BBC I caught a bit of the 1977 ladies final with Virginia Wade. It was great to be able to just see the tennis, with the odd bit of commentary (Dan Maskell of course 🙂 ) and to be able to hear the ball on the rackets (wooden!). Do you remember that tennis balls used to be white? I had completely forgotten!
