The Marine Conservation Society has now launched its plastic challenge. This is basically what we have been trying to do as three colleagues at Northumberland Wildlife Trust since January and it’s great to see the idea given some national attention.
For those wanting to give it a go our advice is to just try. Even if you can’t go all out and remove single use plastics from your life everyone can reduce the amount they ‘create’. To do it properly takes time and effort, to make a big difference is relatively easy. Like most things of this kind cutting the first 50% is simple it gets harder and harder to eat into the remainder until the final few percent requires an enormous amount of effort and time. As for your Shadorma. Excellent. I have a collection of cloth bags I take to the grocer. I try to have several in my car. I would much rather have paper bags which I can use for wrapping, holding newspapers, and other crafts. I do reuse single use bags when I get them. Sometimes to line my smaller trash bins, and other times I collect them in a larger bag because most grocery stores now have a collection for plastic bags to recycle them. One can also cut them in to strips and use them like yarn. Making hats, bags and rugs. Better than to see them blowing free.
Everything is packaged in some kind of plastic. And now you have those three D printing machines that make pretty much anything …out of plastic.

I have to say that, in this case, France has been ahead of the U.K. for quite a while now with single use plastic bags not even available in a lot of supermarkets. It’s a ‘bag for life’, a cardboard box or nothing. I am so used to it now that, when I go to the U.K., I find it bizarre that single use plastic bags are still handed out so freely.

Agreed. I have a bagful of bags in the car and re-use til they fall to bits. Our local market uses paper bags, which get reused a couple of times before they go in the recyclingbin.

Nice poem. I do understand the lament of too much plastic. Some is very useful but like everything it needs to be used with discernment. I use cloth bags and so does my entire family. If I’m going to take home food from a meal at a restaurant, I take my own storage container. I keep them in the car. I think we are all getting wiser about how destructive it can be as well as how useful. I’m cutting back everywhere possible. If I have to use plastic bags, I recycle them. There are bins that take them and make something else with them. Hopefully, they will soon be gone for the most part. Have a great week.

And you. Well put. The tricky ones are things like biscuits with a plastic film outer,a cardboard box and a plastic tray. Or printer ink cartridges, which are even worse.

So much is packaged that way to keep people from stealing things or tampering with them. Ridiculous that it’s necessary.
