Dance Delight

Polka, tango, Virginia reel –
it must be a rainy dinner break,
kept indoors by the weather
we danced for an hour at school –
square dance, old tyme or ballroom –
girl with girl at the convent,
later  with boys in the hall.
Strip the Willow, Dos si Dos.,
Dashing White Sergeant,
Gay Gordons, Velita,
all such jolly good exercise,
but best of all was the smoochy
slow and romantic Last Waltz.

For Ms Quickly whose dance name prompt took me back sixty-odd years.

  1. “Dashing White Sergeant” – I’d love to meet him 🙂
Unfortunately I have a rather vague and purely theoretical idea about these dances. I’m a bit envious and very happy for you, Viv.
Dancing I think is one of those things that boldly celebrates living. A beautiful thing.

What fun. I remember PT classes, out on the hot black tar that was our recess area, dancing Scottish reels.

  3. Flat-footing or clogging is what the mountain folk call this in my neck of the woods. And it is fun!

  4. Ah, a different generation – but the slow dance at the end of the night was just as important 🙂

The Orcadian Strip the Willow is my favourite folk dance! Brings back memories of dancing in the Glasgow Student Union in the 80s. Sally

Dashing White Sergeant! Oh, the memories 🙂 We had an annual event at the local cricket club where we demonstrated our prowess too, Viv. (or lack of 🙂 )
