Hi Grandma,
You’re never gonna believe this
but we’re still here.
The climate changed and we got hotter
the ice melted and we got wetter.
all the flowers wilted
then the earth tilted.
Everything was difficult
It sorted itself out after a fashion
for a while.
Folk stopped being scared,
were greedy again.
Nobody cared
for the planet
so the whole rigmarole
is about to begin again.

Futuro (son of Chaos. son of Stupid)
at dVerse Grace gave us a wonderful long poem written by Ben Burke as a letter to himself from the future. The prompt for us was to do the same, to answer this question: How weird will the future be? I decided to write a letter from my great-great-grandson, instead of from myself, which wouldn’t be very interesting.
Great to share the climate change course with you and discover a common love of poetry as well! Maybe my next project will be a compilation of “climate poetry” to support the awareness campaign.

Viv, it’s like Joni Mitchell’s “The Circle Game,” right? I love the humor you brought to this bitter pill. The “Son of Chaos, son of Stupid” line made me laugh out loud. Those who do not remember history…. thanks! amy

Your poem reminds me of cummings’ ‘pity this busy monster, manunkind’. If you don’t know the poem, check it out. Then think of flowers.

Thanks for the steer, Margo. That last line is a cracker: “there’s a hell
of a good universe next door; let’s go” My proper flowers poem is still hanging around the bottom of my screen. When the kids go, I’ll get down to it.

this is one hard, unpalatable truth…will we ever learn?…

Perfectly stated, Viv! I love how this begins as a letter to grandma…inventive! 🙂

It is a sad poem but I hope not prophetic.

Sometimes it all seems like a vicious circle. We repeat the same patterns again and again.

This sounds about right… the actions we take daily could easily lead to that grim future

It’s way too easy to fall into the rhythm of this poem–proving its point in a big way. I enjoyed it!

oh heck… some things have the nature to repeat and repeat itself again… i wonder though how long the earth really can take our fist hits

I think the signature at the end of your poem tells it all. We are indeed stupid. We know many things do not work yet do very little to change them, nor do we try very hard to find solutions to the things for the problems we cannot solve.

oh i would hope that this…our greed and self centeredness….not caring for the future but only focused on what makes us feel good now…were not a cycle like everything else…

Some things never change, sigh ~ Why do we have to repeat the sins and mistakes from the past ~ I love the approach Viv ~

Somehow this is all to credible.. maybe we have to find other ways to handle greed.. to get another future.. Love the wittiness though.. it really have a better–

Ha! Witty and cruel. But probably right, as I too become cynical. I thought the global economic meltdown would lead us to rethink priorities and change our economic and social principles, but it didn’t. Seems like we never learn, as soon as imminent danger is past.

But maybe, just maybe, our descendants will learn from our mistakes. We can but hope.

So clearly we are going to be around while we finish everything else for our sustenance. It will be tedious to go through the grind again.
