The prompt site We Write Poems has morphed into Red Wolf Poems with a prompt on Thursdays. The first of these is to find a song about a river and incorporate it in some way into our poem.
I thought Moon River, Old Man River, then Old Father Thames – which took me back to my childhood beside the Thames, and a memoir I wrote about those happy times.
But something new seemed called for.
From boggy upland seep
to broad majestic sweep,
past pollard willows,
flowered water meadows;
moorhens, mallards, swans
glide silently below singing avians
in this perfect eco-system,
to its ordained end,
the ocean.
A really good one, Viv. I like the shape.

So pristine, so undisturbed by humans. I like where your song trail took you.

You have captured the diversity of river life well here.

ah. rivers have this lure about them.. the silently slowly meandering one.. Just read heart of darkness and I like how Conrad likes the Kongo river with a snake…

i’m living close to the river rhine – and from childhood on was fascinated by its magic… we used to swim in it as a kid as well..

While visiting in Florida (USA) I saw some Moorhen ducks. So that helped me picture your Thames as more than just a causeway for commerce.
Nicely done.

Evocative!
I have a happy recollection of swimming across the Thames and back from a cousin’s home on the banks. It was a trifle chilly!

Whereabouts? I had to do that double swim before I was allowed to take the boat out on my own – I was 7 or 8, I think when I achieved it.
