The Story of My Morning

Margo Roby gives us a kickoff point for a narrative – mainly for Nanowrimoers, which I am not – once tried, never again. But as a coda she suggests poets can kick off from the word BODY, with several possible definitions. I chose to use A corpse or carcass, in a narrative poem about my techy trials and tribulations.

The story of my morning

This technincompoop has been trying
as hard as an old lady can .
but failing to fix a glitch,
to re-install
software I shouldn’t have to do at all.

Computers
are thoroughly obedient morons,
monsters made of wires and transistors
and goodness knows what else
instead of human bodies we can talk to.

Hours of listening to Vivaldi
and pressing useless stars and hashes
got me nowhere, until in my rage
I turned the page
and converted this voiceless body
from “contact”, “help” and “support”
into a corpse or carcass.

  1. Oh, Viv, “technincompoop” is surely one of the best inventions of a word I’ve heard in quite a while! Hope your computer wises up and realizes she is dealing with a woman who has great need of technology. My Sadie only acts up when deprived of an extra fan…

This is solid stuff, Viv. Amy

Just what is it about Vivaldi’s Four Seasons that induces every other 0800 number to use it as their “entertainment while u wait”? I wonder what Vivaldi himself would make of it? There’s a thought for a poem!

Viv, I’ve had a weekend like that: turned out that what was at fault was the firm hosting some of my sites: they were changing their DNS numbers and I wasn’t aware. Such a mess. Shortened my life by aggravation and lack of sleep 🙂

The ultimate frustration is when one decides to give up and switch the computer off – and it won’t. It isn’t working, but it won’t stop working either. That is when one sits in a corner going, ‘La, la, la …’ and blowing bubbles.

One thing I like about living on the 7th floor: when I contemplate killing my computer, it usually involves dropping it over the balcony. My mother finally said Pax and has stopped using hers. She realised she was approaching it with a sense of dread every day. No way to live. I know the rage you feel and the dread she felt. Two weeks ago, I made myself google articles about all kinds of things that rooted the devil out of computers [free]. I then held an exorcism. Because I, too, am a ‘technincompoop’ I may have ripped out a few flowers with the weeds, but by god, she’s working a little better.

I invested in AVG tune-up which is good for most things, but before I had it, my laptop had crashed and I lost as lot of software, including WORD, which for a writer is très embêtant! I paid good money for a replacement but it won’t instal…………..
