September

Yes, it’s that time again.  But September is proceeding gently this year.

Summer came late this year
as though afraid to raise
our expectations.

Now miracles of light bathe fields in gold
to match the transformed leaves of  trees,
maize harvest not yet under way.

The sky is clear,
and warmth remains,
while Autumn hovers in the wings.

Her stage fright lingers
to stave off approaching
heavy dew and nightly chill.

Winter can wait.

This is a re-written version of a poem I wrote last Autumn, which was wilder and colder than this one! for dVerse Open Link Night.

  1. It still could be any month in North Florida…
I long for season change as it always brings new life..no matter if Summer..Winter..Spring or Fall..

In effect there are often only two significant seasons here..
    Winter and mostly Summer…

Chuckles! You put in that blend of wit around it, Viv! Yes, Autumn would have to look out for itself. Nicely!

  7. Loved the concept of fall’s stage fright… it’s true here, there is that tentative feeling of some trees turning, like two political parties: The Greens and The Colors, vying for dominance. In the end The Browns will win, but don’t tell them that!

It’s unseasonably warm here in Wisconsin, yet the signs are there… fall is just hiding in the wings awaiting her cue to usher in the long winter. Lovely, Viv. Amy

  10. I also enjoyed how you personified autumn, Viv. I’m afraid winter isn’t going to wait for us this year…already snow up in the mountains around us (near Tahoe).

Yes, autumn with stage fright — great image! It does not seem to suffer from that here, though it is quite gorgeous. Lovely poem.
