For whatever it was that sent you into a sulk,
I apologise.
I wish I knew what it was,
so that I could make amends.
Was it the nut in the cake
that broke your tooth?
If it was, I’m sorry.
Was it your best chisel
I blunted on metal,
trying to open a tin?
My sin.
Was it the hole in your sock
that I didn’t repair?
I thought they weren’t worth the effort,
but if they were a favourite pair,
then I’m sorry.
Was it the dent in the door of the car?
I explained about the car park
and the stupid man who opened his door
at the wrong moment. But perhaps
you didn’t believe me.
I apologise.
Okay,
if you’re going to keep this up all day
and never tell me what I’ve done,
I’m not sorry at all.
I’m away to Mum’s until you’ve calmed down
and said you’re sorry.

I love the ending to this, Viv. I used to do that sort of thing with the first husband. Marriage can be so difficult at times.

During my first marriage, things always played out this way. I would “I’m sorry” myself into a tizzy over perceived slights and petty mistakes, then hop in the car and head 2 hours upstate to Mom’s. She’d brew some fresh coffee (sober by then, thank God) and we’d bitch about our husbands while Dad went out to play golf and avoid us both!! GREAT observational poem, Viv! Peace, Amy

It just fries me when people expect me to guess what I’m supposed to be sorry about!
