Celebrate Seasons

http://writersisland.wordpress.com/ would like a poem about seasons.  This one was written in the usual rush during Napowrimo, but I have revised it a bit since then, thanks to Earlybird’s  http://mangetoutetc.wordpress.com/ input.

Spring makes us spring into action:
first warm sunshine, and I’m out there,
weeding and sowing and planting
kneeling and groaning and panting,
unfit from the stasis of winter.

Celebrate storms in their glory:
the shapes of trees  wildly windswept,
the flash across sky and the counting
‘til thunderclap banging and rattling
announces the distance from here.

Celebrate growth in the garden,
spurt  of summer,  first fruit and first rose,
first barbecue invitation,
first shivery swim in the sea.
Long days incite exultation,
incline us to shout out in glee!

Sultry heat merits no celebration –
torpor the most I achieve.

Celebrate first whiff of Autumn:
the colour, the woodsmoke, the leaves
falling, clogging the gutter
in advance of first downpour of rain.
Glory in fruit, preserves and stores,
freezer full of goodness.

Celebrate long winter evenings
by the fire, comfy chair, comfort food.
In the lead-up to Christmas,
celebrations galore
lift the mood in anticipation of snow –
not too much, just a few days of joy
for the children, then celebrate thaw
and welcome return of the sun.

Viv, I enjoyed your take on Autumn. It brought back lots of childhood memories growing up in the Midwest: “the colour, the woodsmoke, the leaves”.

  2. Viv, I can tell you have glee to spare, no matter what the season, except for midsummer… “torpor the most I can achieve,” great line. Loved this. CELEBRATE!

I enjoyed this romp through the seasons. I am embarassed to share that those first spring days find me lazily sitting on the deck with a good book rather than “weeding and sowing and planting//kneeling and groaning and panting..” 😉

Beautiful journey through the seasons, with a lovely emphasis on spring, my favorite time of all. Enjoyed the rhythm and occasional rhyme… worked well with the “journey” idea.

There’s so much to celebrate in each season and this poem covers that well. Here in Florida we don’t have much of a change in weather like they do up north, though. We have fall like weather and then summer for 9 months it seems. I love the way you captured all the seasons.

Beautiful post, Viv. I can’t wait for my first dip in cold Montana lakes. It won’t come until June, though. Two weeks ago, there was still ice on the lake by my parents’ place. brrr… I enjoyed my journey through the seasons in your poem.
