Embroidery

  for One Single Impression

Painting with a needle
is what keeps him sane
when he’s not building houses.
He’s incapable (like me)
of sitting of an evening
with nothing in his hands.
I just crochet, knit or quilt
while he turns out works of art.

The walls are covered with pictures -
birds and camels and arabs,
horses and donkeys
and a curly-horned ram;
a beautiful Chinese girl
wearing a kimono;
a scruffy dog in the offing –
what’s next I wonder,
embroidery’s filling the house.

A great deal of what he makes is shown here. The scruffy dog was finished this weekend, a portrait of Whisky, our friends’ dog.

    Lovely! My sister used to do that. I was more of a latch hook rug type gal.

  4. Tony says:

    A lovely poetic tribute to a talented man. Would you believe it if I told you that I am a needleworker too – although clearly not in Jock’s league.

  5. Stan Ski says:

    Keeping your hands busy improves your power of concentration…

  6. Snakypoet (Rosemary Nissen-Wade) says:

    I sometimes crochet in front of the telly; often do word puzzles. It feels wrong to sit idle and just absorb!

  7. Very artisic in each and every way. I like that expression, painting with a needle. Very kool.

  8. Susan says:

    I totally enjoyed this. And then I went to see the embroideries and came back with an entirely new appreciation of what your poem is saying. How enjoyable those TV times of industry must be–the art, the knitting, and then this poem to paint the world with those precious times as well!

  9. Write Girl says:

    I admire him for his needle work and you for your knitting and quilting. I used to do some painting, but haven’t in a long time. I mostly write poetry….which does keep my hands busy. Whisky is adorable!

  17. Jim says:

    :) Viv, I love his dog, Whisky! I would have liked from him of Adi (our beagle), who died last September.
    Please don’t spend too much time with your needles, you paint sooo nicely from your palette full of lovely words.
    I envy people with talent, those painting with needles, brushes, and pencils. Even when-and if-I paint by the numbers my stuff doesn’t look right. But I do appreciate good art and the works of those with talent.
