Summer’s back – made a cotton frock

The day after I put the fan back in the loft – bringing it down caused the arctic weather to return – summer came back to warm us.  Having nothing but old tat in the way of summer clothes, I made a cotton frock yesterday.  Was I tempting fate again?

Do you remember the walls Jock built to terrace our friends’ garden? We were there for coffee on Wednesday, and (shhh) were able to have it outside in the space transformed by Jock’s walls, some white gravel and old railway sleepers.  We were told that we were the Christening party!

A delightful morning of teasing and  giggles
and (forbidden to me) real coffee, which had me buzzing.

We were entertained by the antics of a pied wagtail hopping about, waiting for us to go so that it could get back to its nest under the eaves behind us.

My photographs are pretty awful as it would NOT keep still.  In flight pictures were just a blur, so these are the best of a bad  bunch.

  3. Sounds delightful.

Your creativity never fails to astonish me. No summer clothes? No problem; just whip up a new dress! Except that most of us couldn’t. :-D

  4. The two of you are MAD talented – a dress in one day, and Jock made that terrace? AND you had coffee? Naughtiness can be wicked fun, no? Happy for you, Viv, and you know what? We’ve sat out in the garden for four days in a row – drought still with us, but at least a cool spell. So refreshing, just like your poem. Peace, Amy

Like others, I’m impressed that you just decided to make a dress and then did. Fabric creations are definitely not one of my skills. ;-) I hope your warm weather is there to stay for a bit.

  6. Nothing feels better summer wear than something made of light loose-fitting cotton… good for you! I haven’t sewn a dress in many years, but you made me remember the process fondlly!

The summer has definitely come at last! Thankfully my house is naturally shady and cool in this weather (instead of cold and damp the rest of the time), so the writing continues. Enjoy it while we can!

  8. Jess says:

Ah the weather here is on off too. In just one day we can get either sunburnt or wet to the skin!It truly is madness round here!Im so impressed you can make a dress,I have trouble taking hems up!It sounds like the coffee morning was a hit too xx

I hear you. On. Off. On again. Off. And to make things worse, even when it’s on it’s on My Beloved Sandra’s side only, as I keep kicking it off. I don’t know why we even bother to sleep together. No, wait…….

  12. Making a dress in a day? What a talent!

    Lovely building work from Jock.

  13. Panama says:

Whilst waiting for the Kite to show, my first Brimstone and Peacock butterflies of the year fluttered past adding more variety to a really good morning. As I am writing this on the Sunday morning, a male Blackcap is in full song somewhere near my garden and I shall be taking Scruff out for a walk around the Cemy. I felt a bit guilty on not taking him with me yesterday, so I hope I can make it up for him today!

(I have had duvet trouble this year. Twice I had put the summer weight duvet on and then the weather has changed back to cool and wet! The fan is still out….)

You made a dress in one day? May we see you wearing it, please?

Jock took a photo, but the camera is playing up and I can’t download it. In any case, I decided it was a bit short – having been made from only 2 metres of fabric – so I’m making a frill to go on the bottom, to hide my ‘orrible varicose veins. I may put one up later, if I can.

I don’t change duvets when it’s hot – I simply sleep on top of it, under the quilt. Generally, hot weather doesn’t last long enough to be bothered having two duvets!

  15. restlessjo says:

Don’t say it too loudly, Viv. It’s made a bit of an appearance here too.

  16. That man sure can build!

What a talented couple you are :)
