A CRABBY TREE

 © Duncan Hutt

Boy, I’m warning you,
if you go on climbing you’ll be stuck
unable to go up or down.
Oh well, don’t say I didn’t warn you.
Just be careful as you fall,
I need those twigs and leaves
you’re breaking, to feed me
and help me to grow wide and tall.
Watch that nest on your way down -
the bird will be back for it soon
and he won’t be too pleased
if you break it.

http://wewritepoems.wordpress.com/ asks for a poem based on a tree, or in the voice of a tree, or about a tree that’s inspired us.  There is a tree that constantly inspires me, and I have written about it many times, notably a shape poem that you’ll find here http://vivinfrance.wordpress.com/2010/04/23/shape-poem/.   Here is something different that popped into my head for this prompt.  The photo shows my grandson climbing a neam tree in the Turks and Caicos Islands

I love the inclusion of the birds’ nest, such a great detail for some reason.

  2. earlybird says:

Love that last bit about minding the nest on your way down.

  3. Sort of a more realistic Giving Tree. “Climb in me all you want, as long as you watch yourself” kind of thing. Clever!

    enjoyed this Viv…thanks for sharing

  5. Mabel Lee says:

Great title. It’s totally the voice of a grumpy grandpa tree.

  6. And, well, the trees deserve our respect. I like how you gave voice to the tree.

  7. I like the idea of the tree demanding respect. Good lessons to be learned in the unheard voice of a tree. :)

  8. Tilly Bud says:

I love the perspective. Unusual :)
